The diets did not claim to be organic but could be formulated to organic standards quite readily. Surprisingly the diets contained the anticoccidial drug salinomycin, also the amino acid pure methionine, indicating that these additives are permitted in the Label Rouge system.

Besides broilers, Label Rouge standards exist for layers, turkeys, ducks, geese, guinea fowl and capons. Layers require double yards (rested in rotation) because they are on range longer than broilers.

Lampkin (1997) outlined a typical feeding programme in the UK for meat birds, based on diets with a reduced content of energy, protein and amino acids to result in slower growth than in conventional production. Examples of formulations are shown in table 4.16.
